LGBT in the Netherlands 〜Islamic influence on tolerance~

 Netherlands-which has “tolerant” images have ever accepted modern values such as equality of sex, human rights and freedom. They firstly legalized the use of soft drugs, euthanasia, the same sex marriage in their history and made a big impact on the global society. In addition, they also have adopted tolerant immigrant policies which promoted the immigration of Islamic people from Turkey and Morocco to the large cities in the Netherlands. This “tolerance” originated from the persecutions of Jewish people during World WarⅡ. Not only Jewish but also gay  lesbians and other minorities were also sent into the concentration camp. Through looking the history of the persecution of Nazis directly, people in Holland has been proud of their policy towards minority.

         However, this “tolerant” atmosphere has not been inconsistent in recent Netherlands. After the murder case of the movie director who was making the film against Islam in 2004, criticism against Muslims have been increasing. Before 1990, there was no big political parties which insisted on the exclusion of Muslims. This stream has changed after this case, September 11 attacks, and another murder case of Pim Fortuyn ( politician, openly gay, insisted on the halt of Islamic immigration) by environment activist.

      After the 9,11 in the US, conservative political parties have been emerging in European nations. For example, Golden Dawn in Greece, Danish People’s party in Denmark, National Party in Spain, were starting to announce the radical policies such as exclusion of all immigrants from other countries and superiority of their own race. Netherlands is not exception. In 2010, Party for Freedom in Netherlands won 24 seats in national congress and made it third party. They were trying to pass the taxation on the Islamic scarfs. The final purpose of this party is the halt of immigration from people in Islamic countries.

         The biggest issue in the Netherlands is “tolerance to every culture” which Dutch people are proud of has been inconsistent in recent years. In Dutch culture, people are given the rights to what kind of lives they choose. This means, public authority should not interfere with people’s personal lives. Thus, they invented the system of “same sex marriage” towards LGBT and admitted the human rights of sexual minority faster than any other countries.

         Education system well reflects this point. In Netherlands, the government is running religious school such as catholic, Jewish, Islamic etc. But it does not mean people who believe in Islam have to choose Islamic school. However, as a result of this system, isolation of “white school” and “black school” occurred. Native Dutch students gathered in White school and non Dutch students ( who have immigrant background) gathered in Black school. These names are also used in the public organization. Although it appears apartheid in South Africa, they have admitted rights to vote for non-Dutch people and world-class public welfare. This means whilie Dutch people are proud of “tolerance” to other minorities, they have a strong “liberalism” which means the rights to protect their own cultures and society. So that Islamic dogma which regards homosexuality as a sin becomes controversy.

Because of this cultural atmosphere, the political parties which insist on “people should not be interfered with by anyone” have been emerging. The reason why Party for Freedom criticized the Muslims is that they think the increase of numbers of people which have totally “different” culture will be a menace to the right “people should not be interfered with by anyone”.

Reason Why Yukio Mishima’s “confession of the mask” get popular in Japan

Yukio Mishima is one of the most famous writers in Japan. Even though Yukio Mishima’s works contains descriptions of homosexuality or direct sex, his novel is regarded as the most sophisticated and eminent work in Japanese literal history. Why was his work accepted during the era of Showa and does he get popular?

Here is the story of “confession of the mask”. The main protagonist is referred to in the story as Kochan. Being raised during Japan’s era of right-wing militarism and Imperialism, he struggles from a very early age to fit into society. Like Mishima, Kochan was born with a less-than-ideal body in terms of physical fitness and robustness, and throughout the first half of the book (which generally details Kochan’s childhood) struggles intensely to fit into Japanese society. Due to his weakness, Kochan is kept away from boys his own age as he is raised, and is thus not exposed to the norm. This is what likely led to his future fascinations and fantasies of death, violence, and sex. In this way of thinking, some have posited that Mishima is similar.

Kochan is a homosexual, and in the context of Imperial Japan he struggles to keep it to himself. In the early portion of the novel, Kochan does not yet openly admit that he is attracted to men, but indeed professes that he admires masculinity and strength. Some have argued that this, too, is autobiographical of Mishima, himself having worked hard through a naturally weak body to become a superbly fit body builder and male model.

The important point of this story is the concept of “mask” and “self consciousness”. To analyze where this mask come from, we should think Mishima himself.

For LGBT ( in this paper it is supposed Mishima is gay) who do not come out their sexuality, a mask is a part of their lives. A lot of gays and lesbians disguise heterosexual still now.

In his later years, Mishima organized “tate-no-kai” which is the right-wing organization composed by young and beautiful university students. He made a homo-social group and tried to seek a bond between only men. And this is also from his fetish to the military uniform and young obedient men.

Not only his works but also his life and performance are always showy and conspicuous. He also appeared on the stage or screen and expressed himself by using variation of tools. It is said that Mishima was too self consciousness and anthropophobia so that he did abnormal performance. But as I mentioned before, this characteristic is not peculiar to him, but also general among homosexual people.

Living with mask of heterosexual imposed people to be sensitive other people’s eyes. As a result they are seized with fear of society while they want to express themselves overly.

This work was released in 1949 , the four years after the World WarⅡ. This is the times Japanese society restarted and a lot of people are confused by this drastic change. Because of the lost in the war, established moral and system of society was destructed. “Confession of the mask” is located in this stream.

Seemingly, this novel aimed to descript the young gay man and his recollection, but what attracted people of this time is the new concept of “self consciousness”. From the Peace Preservation Law which was established in 1928, freedom of culture and art is overly restrained and people have no way to express themselves. Works which deal with homosexuality is tabooed for a long time.

In spite of this fact , people accepted this novel and Mishima. The drastic content about gay boy is of course its reason of popularity. But true fact is people desired to learn how to express themselves and what is self-consciousness.

留学にむけて

もうこのブログにはどう思われるとかいいから書きたいことを存分に書くことにしたw

自己満でいいやw

最近感じるのは人生には波があるな、ということ。頑張り時というか

自分の全力を出してやらなければいけない時があるなと。

自分の場合は高校受験と高校時代のNGO活動が自分の全力を書けた時でした。

自分の高校はオール５じゃないと推薦でいけないところだったんだけど

今考えれば寝る間を惜しんで、友達も作らずに、あそこまでオール５をとることに固執してたのは無意味なようで自分の中では確かな自信につながったかなと思う。完璧に綿密に計画的にやることの大切さはあのとき知った。一つでも崩れないように、この作業が結果としてどこに結びつくか、因果関係を考え、物事に取り組む姿勢をあのとき学べてよかったなと思う。高校のときのNGO活動もそうだった、チャンスをつかむ為には運までも努力で引き寄せなければ行けない、運も自分で左右する綿密さが必要だと感じた。

今考えると20年間どれもがむしゃらに、やってきたなと思う。でも、嘘もいっぱいあったなと思う。何かを完璧にするため「らしさ」にこだわるあまり、誇れないこともしたなあと思う。自分に嘘をついてる時期もありました。特に大学に入ってからは、自分の傲慢さに嫌気がさしたり、物事がうまくすすまないことを自分のもつアイデンティティーのせいにしたり、真剣に生きるのをやめようかと考える時期もあったりしました。今まで努力で突き進んだ分、思い通りに行かず、初めて色々なことを真剣に悩んでつらかった時期でもありました。

今回のオランダ留学はある意味で自分の人生の転換点に成ると思う。そして20年間の総まとめに。今まで自分がキーワードとしてきた「平和、文化、性」。何が平和なのか、何が性なのか、そして文化がどのように交錯し人々の間に争いと偏見が生まれるのか。

一年間のオランダで自分に欠けているものを身につけたい。できるだけ多くの人に会ってたくさん挫折して、例え下手な英語で笑われようが、自分が生きて行く意味と、自分が生きた証をこの世界に大きく残したい。慶應の２年間は悩んで悩んで時には薄っぺらに生きた二年間だったけど、この留学からその先の目標に対しては覚悟を持ちたい。

いつも途中でつらくて泣いてもうやめようかと思う時がある。それでも、今まで「こうなりたい」「こうしたい」という自分の信念があるから乗り越えられてきた。留学や試験への挑戦は正直だれとの戦いでもなくて、「自分自身」が試されているんだと思う。どれだけの覚悟をもっているか、信念を貫き通す覚悟と能力があるのか。だから、自分は人生をかけてこの２年間に臨みたい。生きた意味をこの人生に残したい。細部の細部の細部の細部にまでこだわり、綿密に努力し、自分の力で社会を変えることのできる力をもちたい。頑張ろう！

TRANSGRESSION

今日授業でQUEER 理論の"TRANSGRESSION"について学んだ。QUEER理論とはこの前も説明したけど男や女、同性愛というカテゴリーを哲学的に研究する分野でアメリカの大学ではメジャーとしても認められている（UCLAとかが有名）

TRANSGRESSIONていうのは簡単に言うと「一線を超える」という意味で薬／同性愛／車での暴走／その他一般的に地下的で半社会的と思われている事象をあえて試みることで新たな認識を得ようとするっていう一種の文学的哲学的試み。

それをやったけっこ有名な人物が「ランボー」。19世紀にフランスで生まれました。彼はダリとかsurrealismとかダダイズムとかクレイジーなアートの潮流の先駆けと成った人なんだけど、まあこの写真の目の白め具合的にいっちゃってたらしい

例えば彼は「同性愛者」ではなかったんだけど男と感情もないにも関わらずセックスをすることで全く新しい視点を手にしようとしたりとか、薬物をやることで発想を得ようとしたみたい。

ここで自分が面白いなと思ったのは、普段自分たちが何気なく意識している「性」っていうものが実はそれに対する欲求のみからくる訳ではないんだということ。実験としての「性」や発想の為の「薬物」、薬や同性愛といってもエクスタシーや性的欲求からくるものが全てではないという所に面白みを感じました。

パプアニューギニアのSAMBIANという民族では男性は全て最初「女性」であるそうです。その部族の間では男の子は14才とかになると年上のお兄さん的な人と関係を結ばなければいけなくて、それが18才ころまで続くらしい。んでそっからは一転女の人と結婚してそのまま暮らす。つまり母乳を飲んで育った男子は最初女子で、彼らが年上の男性の精子を飲むことで初めて男性になるんだそう。「性」と一口に行ってもなにが「性」なのか簡単に言うことはできないし、アインシュタインの言葉にあるように、時代が進むにつれて自分たちの常識はますます偏見の蓄積になっている、そんな気がしました

最初一週間はローマを一人で徘徊してから現地でチケット買ってオランダ行こうかなあと思います！８月８日の夜便で日本出発！

ローマではとにかく遺跡やらなんやらを制覇しようと中心部にホステル取る予定です

ただイタリアに友達だれもいないし最初っから迷ったり騙されたりしそうで不安だ

でも知らない場所にいって、初めての空気を吸って新しい友達をつくるのってわくわくするよね：）あとは一人旅だと色々なことを自分の中で考えたりする。旅行の時の夕日とかやけに見ると感傷的に成る

パスタ食べたり、あとは新しい人たちに会うのが楽しみだあ

慶應交換留学大全（その３）

どうもジャクソンです！一ヶ月ぶりの更新

今日は慶応義塾大学の交換留学そのものについて自分の思う所を書いてみるね！

ご存知の通り慶應は日本では一定の評価を得ている大学だけどじゃあそれが

交換留学協定校にどれほど結びているのかめっちゃ調べてみました

例えば慶應大学が提携している大学でQSランキングの上位校（１００位以上くらい）は

ダートマスカレッジ(USA ) /  ブラウン大学 (USA) / カリフォルニア大学バークレー校 (USA) / カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校 (USA) /ジョージタウン大学(USA)/ カーネギーメロン大学(USA)/

シンガポール国立大学 ( Singapore) / マッギル大学 ( Canada) / トロント大学 (Canada) / ジュネーヴ大学(Switzerland) / 香港大学 (Hongkong) ／アムステルダム大学 (Netherlands)/ライデン大学(Netherlands) /エラスムス大学ロッテルダム校（Netherlands) / KTHロイヤルインスティチュート（Sweden)/ ヨーテポリ大学(Sweden)  etc

 あとはランキング上位じゃないけど超名門は

パリ政治学院 (France) / ロンドン大学東洋アフリカ学院 (UK) / 北京大学 (China) /

とか！

とりあえずQSランキング的に言えば上位校はかなりかなりそろっている感じ！

じゃあ早稲田はどうかととか考えた時

オクスフォード大学 (UK) /コロンビア大学(USA)とか明らかに最強に名門がそろっている（慶應にはない）。あと早稲田の特徴ははハンガリー／モロッコ／ウクライナ／スロヴェニアとかとかほぼ地球全域をカバーしてること

慶應の交換留学協定校はハーバードとかケンブリッジとか超スーパー名門のところはないけどいわゆる「名門レベル」のところはだいたいそろってるというのが調べてみた結果です。

ただ慶應の問題点をあげるとすればそういうマイナーな国の留学先が皆無って感じなところかな（トルコとかはあるけど）。中東とかは残念ながら皆無 :(　エジプトいきたかった〜

だから中東とかマイナーな国に行きたい人は早稲田がおすすめ

それでもけっこ自分は慶應の交換留学の姿勢が好きで

協定校の質を担保しているところ（妙にプライドが高い）！

ただ友達とかけっこ落ちている人いたんで、もうちょっと協定校増やしてもいいかなという感じでした〜w
